Do You Remember When Cork City FC Played Against Bayern Munich?

It was the 18th September 1991, and Cork City FC hosted Bayern Munich in the UEFA Cup. It was the first leg of two games in the knockout round of 64 teams.

As Cork City FC take on Linfield this evening in the UEFA Europa League qualifiers I want to hark back to a hotly contested game that finished in a draw. It was a big surprise for the German giants of European football, and to many stalwarts around the continent. To many a die hard Cork City fan, the videos below will bring a tear to the eye. A club that is currently on the rise and re-emulating the glories of the past with the serious contention for the Premier Division and the FAI Cup. Our spell in European football may just be around the corner once we get past this two-legged affair. A game where the second and final leg of the qualifiers will be played on Home Turf.

On the day itself, City took the lead in the 26th minute with a wonder strike from now football veteran, David Barry. Seventeen minutes later, and after a few chances, Bayern scored through the German Stefan Effenberg. The game finished one a piece.

Bayern capitulated on the away form of City and beat the Leesiders 2-0. This is probably one of the most memorable games of a club that is steeped in National glory and lore. Here’s to our veterans and to our current squad.

Some beautiful commentary and footage of both legs in this epic UEFA Cup tie.

Finally before you click away. I want you to watch this glorious montage of Cork City’s qualifying Campaign for the Champions League in 2006. We had a meteoric squad of well seasoned players with International and Overseas experience. I’m hoping we emulate the same tonight against Linfield.
