A Very Early Video of Shandon Bells

Good day to you Norries Of Cork. I’ve just been looking through the world of the internet, and I have seen that The Associated Press (AP) and British Movietone have pooled their resources to upload just over half-a-million videos to YouTube. These video stories have been shot from all over the world and date from 1895 to the present day. I’ve been combing through the videos and found a nice collection of footage from our home of Cork. Ye know how obsessed I am about photographing Shandon Bells, so I was delighted to see one special video.

A lot of the footage is not dated, so it’s very hard to get an impression of the time when these short historic films were shot. This video is a fine example of Shandon Bells in the early 20th century. The bells are ringing over the early Industrial city of Cork with the towering chimneys of the factories and mills bellowing smoke in the distance. The footage is black and white and shot at between 12 to 18 frames per second which leads one to believe this footage may have been shot between 1910 and 1930.
